From Batman to Easy Rider, The Last Detail to Speed, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford to Blue Velvet, iconic actor Dennis Hopper gave us some of the most iconic characters in American cinema. And in this new REELZ documentary by RIFF documentary creator Ed Brockman, we get a closer look at one of the most unsettling characters in the actor’s life. And on a dark note, it looks like the search
for his body will prove to be an equally bloody endeavour. “The worst part is that I have absolutely no idea what happened to him,” Hopper’s son Wesley told Brockman. “I haven’t even been told what happened. And I think that’s very important for anybody to remember. I think you have to be able to know how you feel about it. I feel the whole world knows he committed suicide. I think there’s people who don’t know.” The
trailer opens with footage of the 74-year-old actor wearing a gas mask and discussing his dream of becoming a vampire in the 1960s. And soon we’re told that Dennis Hopper discovered he had terminal brain cancer shortly before he died. “There were moments where we went to the hospital. I went in on my own. I saw my dad and I didn’t say anything,” Hopper’s son Dane revealed. “The doctors did say that we should keep him
alive until the brain scan came back and they could see if he was going to make it. And we said, ‘Let’s try’. I kept thinking to myself, no good can come of it, but we’re all trying to do the best thing for our dad.” However, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse. Autopsy… The Last Hours of Dennis Hopper airs Friday 18 November at 19:15 UK time on REELZ.
